Jojo Austria, viewing the world with his art

Julio Jose Austria, commonly known as Jojo Austria, graduated Fine Arts in the University of Santo Tomas. To date, he already had 12 solo shows in Austria, Germany, USA, Thailand and the Philippines, for a short span of 5 years. Not to mention the 35 group shows in between.

Truly, this artist is rising fast in the art industry and nothing seems to be able to stop this young artist to soar high. More artworks are expected to come out from this young lad that will surely make a mark in the Philippine art industry, and maybe, to the world. Sam Penaso, a Boholano visual and performance artist, and Fine Arts graduate of the Technological University of the Philippines, has held 14th solo exhibitions to date. Kaida Gallery Philippines celebrates 32010

Kaida Gallery celebrates its third year anniversary with 32010 on February 14, 2010, Sunday. It is all about art and numbers as the gallery opens its doors to the public with an impressive gathering of artists who have emerged in the Philippine art scene in the ‘80s, ‘90s and the ‘00s. In the tradition of Kaida’s annual grand exhibitions-- 1/50 in 2008 and 2/60 in 2009, the number of artists to be showcased is increased by ten, totaling 3/70 this year.

Dinggot Prieto and Palawan’s Giant Christmas Tree

Maria Teodora Conde-Prieto, also known as Dinggot Prieto, is the artist behind the giant Christmas tree that was raised in Puerto Princesa, Palawan.

Prieto, who majored in comparative literature, and philosophy back in college, was a self taught artist. Although she was not able to get a formal training, painting and art is her passion.

Dinggot Prieto was born and raised in Baguio City, but her mother was a native of Puerto Princesa. Prieto went back to her roots when she decided to migrate back to Palawan in 1990. This act also resulted for Prieto to pursue her art by establishing a cafe-gallery and repository for arts and culture in Puerto Princesa in 1994 called Kamarikutan.

Prieto worked with the national Commission for Culture and the Arts from 2002 to 2008. She was also a member of the executive committee for visual arts. She also joined the provincial government of Palawan as program director for culture and arts, and established the Palawan Culture and Arts Guild together with Governor Joel Reyes. READ MORE..

Filipino Artist: Jo Layug Loignon

Jo Layug Loignon was born in the Philippines but spent most of her life abroad in Europe, the United States, Africa, Middle East and Asia. Late this summer, she returned to the Philippines from Cambodia with her husband who recently retired from the Canadian diplomatic service.

Jo started out as a printmaker. During her husband’s assignment in Hong Kong, she worked as a freelance photographer and experimented with non-silver photography, a process which she took delight in because of the endless possibilities it offered. READ MORE...

Born in Tiaong, Quezon Province, Norris grew up from a family of artists. Growing up with his mother in Alaminos Laguna, who is a sculpturist using ivory and ceramics materials, and his brother who paints using oil canvass, it is Norris’ fate to be a fine artist. He was greatly influenced by his family and was exposed in colors, artistry and creativity all his life.

Norris started to look at his craft seriously when he was in 3^rd year High School. His love of art made him paint almost everything. From old houses, birds, animal heads, old jars, kalesa (horse chariot), jeepney, tricycle, dusts, matches, and portraits. He loves to take pictures of landscapes and sketches them at home. Flores de Mayo and Santacruzan

Stop and smell the roses. During the month of May, in the tropical islands of the Philippines (where my roots are), we don't have to stop -- the fragrance of flowers floats in the air.

When the rains begin to pour after a long dry spell, flowers magically bloom overnight. And being predominantly Catholic, the Filipinos celebrate the beneficial rains by giving praise to the Blessed Virgin Mary.

The townfolk gather the colorful flowers to decorate the Parish Church altars and aisles. They bundle the blooms in exotic arrangements for the many different festivities all together referred to as the "Flores De Mayo" (Flowers of May). READ MORE...
