At the forefront and the highlight of the PIAF are the major projects of the committees of the SCA, namely, Cinema, Dance, Literary Arts, Architecture and Allied Arts, Visual Arts, Music, and Dramatic Arts.

Angelo Ortiz, a World champion Pianist of the 2006 WCOPA (World Championship of Performing Arts), is performing an all Spanish Classical repertoire entitled “Variaciones Classicas Espanolas – piano de concierto” at the Meralco Theatre on January 30, 2010 at 7:30pm.

Entitled “Variaciones” or “Variations”, Angelo will be playing variations of famous Spanish classical works from different Spanish Suites such as Suite Andalucia, Suite Espanola, Carmen Suite 1 and other classical selections by De Falla, Lecuona, Albeniz and Rodrigo. READ MORE...

Dinggot Prieto and Palawan’s Giant Christmas Tree

Maria Teodora Conde-Prieto, also known as Dinggot Prieto, is the artist behind the giant Christmas tree that was raised in Puerto Princesa, Palawan.

Prieto, who majored in comparative literature, and philosophy back in college, was a self taught artist. Although she was not able to get a formal training, painting and art is her passion.

Dinggot Prieto was born and raised in Baguio City, but her mother was a native of Puerto Princesa. Prieto went back to her roots when she decided to migrate back to Palawan in 1990. This act also resulted for Prieto to pursue her art by establishing a cafe-gallery and repository for arts and culture in Puerto Princesa in 1994 called Kamarikutan.

Prieto worked with the national Commission for Culture and the Arts from 2002 to 2008. She was also a member of the executive committee for visual arts. She also joined the provincial government of Palawan as program director for culture and arts, and established the Palawan Culture and Arts Guild together with Governor Joel Reyes. READ MORE..

Efren Penaflorida, CNN Hero of the year!

Efren Penaflorida, our very own “kariton Classroom” teacher has been named 2009 CNN Hero of the Year and will be receiving $100,000 to continue his work.

Efren was once a high school boy that is bullied by gang members, threatened with his life and was in a point of quitting school to fight back to these gangsters... yes... he was one of those kids.

But it all changed when he chose to put his future in his hands and not let anybody else take control of his. It was in 1994 when he was introduced in the Club 8586 during one of their in-campus programs. From then on, Efren chose to make a difference. Filipino Achiever: Angelo Ortiz, World Class Pianist

Angelo Ortiz is what you can say, your typical neighborhood kid. But hanging out with his cousin during one summer time, had brought a remarkable change in his life.

Curious with his cousin’s organ lessons, Angelo then asked for a piano from his parents persistently, but received a toy piano instead from ‘Santa Claus’. Surprisingly, he was able to play music with the toy piano without any guidance or assistance. Seeing the potential and interest, Angelo’s parents then bought him a real piano that started his formal piano lessons. At his young age, the piano teacher was able to see the potential and the talent that she advised Angelo’s parents to pursue the training, and he never stopped playing since then. READ MORE...

Filipino Artist: Jo Layug Loignon

Jo Layug Loignon was born in the Philippines but spent most of her life abroad in Europe, the United States, Africa, Middle East and Asia. Late this summer, she returned to the Philippines from Cambodia with her husband who recently retired from the Canadian diplomatic service.

Jo started out as a printmaker. During her husband’s assignment in Hong Kong, she worked as a freelance photographer and experimented with non-silver photography, a process which she took delight in because of the endless possibilities it offered. READ MORE...

San Pablo city, known to be the City of Seven Lakes started their Coconut Festival in 1996 by Mayor Vicente Amante, celebrating the abundance of coconut in the city, which, has been a major role in the livelihood of the people. The festival serves as a gateway to showcase the products of San Pablo and to promote tourism in the city. The week long celebration has several activities that cater to young and old alike. The Las Piñas Boys Choir (LPBC) emerged victorious in the two categories it competed in the World Choir Games 2008, Graz, Austria!

Once again, we have shown the world that the Filipino talent is world class!

The Las Piñas Boys Choir (LPBC) got the Silver Medal in the Musica Sacra Category, keeping up with the best choirs of the world, more than 70 choirs, pleasing the 7 judges from all over the world. Located in Montalban Rizal, this 7.5 hectare zoo is around 70% finished. Though there are still a lot of areas that are being built and established, a good tour of it will take you around 2-4 hours, depending on how intricate and informed you want to be.
